Had good workout yesterday – broke a good sweat. Did Rusty’s chest/shoulders/tris/ab workout last night. Had second thoughts about actually working out cuz I was pretty tired from work. In day job, I worked from 11am to 1130pm Tues; turned around and went back to work 8am to 6pm yesterday. Didn’t get a lot of sleep Tues night (bout 5 hours – not enough for this middle-age crazy)
That was pro-wrestler, Terry Funk’s handle toward the end – “I’m middle age crazy,” and he was!
Anyhoo – been at Rusty’s Visual Impact program for a little over a month. Can’t follow his exact schedule because of work, but been more consistent of late.
Because I use Bodylastic – as I’ve said before – I’ve made or tweaked his routine to fit what I have – of course.
Here’s a couple of things though:
- Need to really brace with the legs before getting into the heavier bands – doing incline press nearly throw me back thru the door.
- Almost ran my face into the floor when I gave out doing elevated push-ups (too old to be abusing myself like this!) on the last set. But seriously, be careful with the elevated pushups (or dips if you’re using the back of chairs)
- Resting 20 to 30 seconds between sets on the secondardy exercises is almost HIIT like, or aerobic – sweat up a storm.
- Resistance bands are the best for pumping the tris – unbelievable.
- Don’t believe the TV infomercials – hard and awkward to do leg raises using the Iron gym pullup bars on the doorway – but doable, still.
- Planks for hard. To make it hard, tense your abs hard as you hold the position. Elevate your feet when you can hold for more than 60 seconds or go for 2 minutes – become iron.
And…
This was my variation for laterals last night.
- I slipped the ankle straps over forearms up to where it meets my elbows.
- Forearms kept perpendicular to upperarm.
- I think raising my elbows while pretending I have a bottle in both hands which I pour as I raise my elbows – if that makes sense.
If you’re using Bodylastics too, give this variation a try.

Couple of things; I’m just your basic, ordinary guy. No delusions about thinking I’m some Korean Adonis. A week or 2 away from turning 50 – all I want is to be healthy and strong enough to stick around long enough to see my little girls grow to be good people and start their own families. Plus, I think the best workout clothes are the most basic – for me, a t shirt and a pair old cargo shorts is good enough!
