Inspired by a 61 Year Young Man To Get in Great Shape…

Smart Weight Gain’s objective is pretty simple, it’s stated right up by the heading, “Get Lean, Get Healthy, Get Strong for a Life Worth Living Well…With a Little Help From an Ordinary Guy Doing the Same…”  I’m the ordinary guy.  And since I’ve begun this post, I’ve also come to understand that I’m not, however, an inspirational guy.

My story is not inspirational.  Nothing about me is gonna make you say, “damn…”

Many, many moons ago, I was in decent shape.  Couple of years ago, I was horrific shape, as this picture of me taken last April 2010 will attest to.  I am in better shape now, but you can still see the flabby boobs, the soft abs and obliques.  Nothing inspirational here.

I eat cleaner, I drink more water, and I exercise 2 to 3 times a week.

Still, nothing inspirational here…

Hold that thought…

A couple of weeks ago, I started writing about fitness over 50.  Why?  Because I turned 50 over the summer and perspective changes when you hit the half century mark.

But…

The point I wanted to make was that the perspectives may change but not your body.  You exercise.  You eat well.  You build muscle or get lean based on your objectives and goals – same as for the younger folks.  Passing the 50 marker doesn’t affect that.

And then…

About the time I was formulating my first post, I received an email from Tom Venuto (unlike me, there’s nothing ordinary about Tom and his accomplishments, just google him to see what I mean) that really drove home that point.  Tom spoke about the “life-changing, inspiring transformation stories” that emerged from his 98 day Burn the Fat challenge Summer Body Transformation Contest.

I took a look…

Wow…

What a coincidence.

One of the champions – and he is a champion, if only for the reason that he finished the 98 day contest – was a 61 year old man “handicapped with two bad hips, two canes, with bone on bone arthritis.”

Here I am talking about 50 year olds, with no particular challenges, staying in shape – and this 61 year old, with all his challenges, is walking the talk.

I talked about perspectives, here’s one – his:

“I’ve been saying someday I will be slim all my life. I am now 60 years old. Not too many years left for excuses. And now… I need a hip replacement. However, the doctors will not operate on me until I lose 48 pounds (he wants me at 300). So, I have tentatively set my operation date one week after this contest ends…”

It’s a different outlook than a 20 year olds’.

Here’s the thing – you don’t have to wait until you’re 50 (like me) or you’re 60 (like John) to lose weight, feel great and vastly improve the quality of your life.

But if you are over 50 and you’ve got a 60 plus inch waist like John HAD; then understand that the only true obstacle to succeeding like John is your belief and your “want-to.”

Not your age…

Not your handicaps…

As John proved – and as others have also – it’s all about putting your excuses aside and walking the talk – like John.

And I know this…

After reading John’s story – It’s time for me to stop making excuses for my flabby boobs and soft sides.  I’m going to get Tom’s course and become a champion like John, if only in my own mind.

By the way, if you want to read about some of challenges that John had to overcome, here’s the story:

They Laughed When The “Old Fat Guy” With Two Canes And Bone-on-Bone Arthritis Tried Pumping Iron In the Free Weight Room

Read and feel good for John,
Hyo

PS – I’ll let you know how I’m doing with his course.  I’m leaving for Korea 10/9 for a week to attend my brother-in-law’s wedding but I’m going to get Tom’s course tonight, start it and work through the interruption.

PPS – Those of you who aren’t over 50 and when to take a look at how the “younger” crowd did in this contest; you can check out a really – I mean REALLY – hot 43 year young gal (actully pretty attractive before she started, to boot) and a ripped stud who did this while he was IN IRAQ of all places – amazing):

How To Get Ripped Like A Bodybuilder, Fitness Model Or Action Movie Star!

Tom should have titled it, “How Ordinary Guys and Gals Get Ripped…”

See you in a few months!

PPPS – It’s a few minutes past midnight (10/1 now) and I just bought Tom’s course, Burn the Fat/Feed the Muscle,  and scratch that thing about me starting it tonight.  I downloaded the darn thing and the main ebook is 340 pages and about 400 pages total when you throw in all the bonus books.  I’ll probably take a couple of days to digest and probably start it right as we head out to Korea.
