Thoughts and Musings on Getting in Shape… Or Not

Just wanted to give some thoughts, musings, and so forth on observations of late…

To start off…

Wow – Joe Gold must be rolling over in his grave.  The local Kmart just put the “Gold’s Gym 7-in-1″ kit on its shelves and it’s sad.  It has the pull bar that you can hook over a door frame.  I use the original Iron Gym workout bar, so even though it’s a knockoff, no biggie.  Same with the rotating pushup handles.

And I get that Gold’s Gym wants to make a few bucks by copying others and slapping their name on it.  After all, some folks live and die (or buy in this case) by the trust they have in Gold’s.  That’s okay.

Oh, but man..

This just can’t be.

The kit also has their version of the Shake Weight dumbbell.  Somebody help me here.  I can’t believe Gold’s Gym is using their brand to peddle this crap.  Wow…

That Shake Weight thing is just laughable.  But hey, a bunch of folks buy it – I guess.  Which would explain Gold’s Gym grubbing for it’s little slice.  So far, the Weider empire has held off.  Don’t know if good old Joe is still involved or not, but here’s hoping they take a pass on this.

In business, there’s this saying:

Plan your work and work your plan.

That short, pithy statement of 7 words is what separates getting things done and watching the world go by.  And it can apply to just about anything, to include losing weight or getting in shape.

For example…

You want to manage what you eat, not the circumstances around you.  If your target is to consume 1500 or 1800 calories a day, then you need to plan what you are going to eat and then work that plan.

One way would be set a day aside – say Sunday.  Sunday always work.

On Sunday, plan out your meals for the next 6 days.  Not so hard.  And here’s the kicker.  Make or prepare all your meals on Sunday.  Again, not so hard.

Getting moving in the kitchen.  In one short afternoon, you can whip up a batch of tomato sauce or marinara from scratch.  Cut and prepare several pieces of boneless, chicken breast.  Prepare a few cuts of Salmon filets.  Make 2 dozen hard boiled eggs.  Cut up all your salad ingredients.  Make a couple of batches of tuna/egg salad with dijon mustard.  The possibilities are truly endless.  And fun.

Learn to cook if you have not done so already.  It’s great fun – did I mention that already.  You get to decide what you eat not some food manufacturer out there somewhere.  If you’re married or have a significant other, have her or him help.  It’ll be a blast.

And you will go a long way in setting yourself up for success.

Here’s another saying:

Inspect what you expect and expect what you inspect.

Losing weight, getting in shape, or building muscle is not a haphazard endeavor.  You need to painfully and honestly guage your progress.  You need to take pictures, weigh yourself (T. Venuto has an interesting answer this issue in his Q&A session – Should You Weigh Yourself Everyday or Throw Away Your Scale?) , and measure your progress.  If you don’t have your own set of before pictures, then take them now.  Pictures have a way of showing you how really fat you are – in ways that just looking in a mirror can’t.

Trust me…

You look okay in the mirror.  Your biceps getting peaky.  Your Tris are coming out.  Your lats look like wings.  Your pecs – you got the drift.

Take a picture.  Better yet, put a brown paper bag over your head and take a picture.

It may not be that pretty.  But you need to do it.

But speaking of someone that is pretty…

Some of the most popular muscle sites show pictures or galleries of really, really attractive gals.  One site has a section for “figure athletes.”  What is that?  Near as I can figure, none of the gals in that section seem very athletic.  It’s muscle building dedicated to building huge muscles and it features pictures of gals not very muscular.

Don’t me wrong, these gals are beautiful but I would have thought that those sites would post pictures of fitness athletes or women bodybuilders.

But nothing with posting the pictures of those gals.

I saw the picture of this person to the right over at T-nation.com and – wow.

This gal is utterly breathtaking.  I don’t know where this picture came from originally or what copyright status is but until someone notifies me to take it down, I’m keeping it up here.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any info as to the photographer or even the model’s name, or I would at the very least link to the source.  As it is, I don’t – so.  So, if you want to see more pictures like her’s or even her, you can go to the figure athletes section of T-Nation.com where I first saw this picture.

Again, my apologizes to anyone whose copyright I’ve violated.  But I will take it down if anyone objects (hopefully not – don’t tell my wife)

And speaking of something not so pretty…

In fact, downright ugly…

What the heck is happening to the Patriots?

That their defense sucked was a given but their offense?

They’ve scored like less than 20 points for the last 3 games and lost the last 2!  That hasn’t happened since – what – several thousand years ago.  And Jets are up next.

1 week to figure out what’s wrong and get it fixed.

Worked 11am to 11pm last night followed by 8am to 6pm today – tired, hitting the sack…

See you next time…

Keep in touch….

Be good…
